Quick answer

Tiling a bathroom in Ireland costs about €70 to €150 per m² installed in 2026, tiles included. Large-format and decorative tiles run €130 to €250+ per m². A typical 4 to 6 m² family bathroom tiled full height costs about €3,200 to €5,400 with tanking and prep. All are Build Me estimates for Dublin, incl. VAT.

Here is the surprise. Small tiles often cost more per m² than big ones. A 5 x 15 cm wall tile at Deluxe Bathrooms lists at €51 per m² on sale. Many 120 x 60 cm porcelain tiles at Tile Merchant cost €34.99 per m². The big tile is cheaper to buy, but it costs more to fit well.

How Much Does It Cost to Tile a Bathroom per m² in Ireland?

Installed tiling costs about €70 to €150 per m² for most Irish bathrooms in 2026. That covers the tiles, adhesive, grout and fitting. It does not cover stripping old tiles, levelling or tanking, which we price separately below. In Dublin, prices sit at the upper end of each range.

The biggest swing is the tile itself. ShamFix's October 2026 guide puts fitting alone at €35 to €65 per m². Handld's July 2026 guide gives €35 to €75, with €50 as typical. Tile Merchant's September 2026 guide is higher, at €60 to €90 per m². In practice, small tiles, mosaics and very large formats push the fitting price up.

In a full bathroom renovation, tiling is priced into the whole job rather than per m². That is how our fixed-price bathroom renovation packages work. The table below helps you sense-check any tiling quote you get.

How Much Do Bathroom Tiles Cost in Ireland?

Bathroom tiles in Ireland cost from about €20 to over €100 per m² in October 2026. Most families choose tiles between €25 and €60 per m². Tile Merchant's September 2026 guide gives a similar spread. It puts standard ceramic at €20 to €30 per m² and mid-range porcelain at €40 to €80+.

Prices change with promotions, so compare per m², not per box. Always add about 10% for cuts and breakages, as Deluxe Bathrooms advises on its product pages. Rooms with lots of corners, or tiles laid in a pattern, need more.

Are Large-Format Tiles Dearer to Fit Than Small Tiles?

Yes, per m², large-format tiles usually cost more to fit, even when the tile is cheaper. A 120 x 60 cm porcelain tile weighs about 15 to 18 kg. It needs a flat wall, full adhesive cover on the back and a levelling clip system. Two people often handle each tile.

The walls matter most. Old Irish bathrooms often have uneven plaster or blockwork. A big tile shows every dip, so the tiler may need to skim, board or level first. ShamFix's 2026 guide notes that 600 x 1200 mm and larger tiles sit at the top of the fitting range.

Small tiles are slow for a different reason: more tiles, more grout lines and more cuts. Metro and mosaic tiles take far longer per m² than a 60 x 30 cm tile. By comparison, mid-sized tiles of 30 x 60 or 60 x 60 cm are usually the cheapest to fit.

Large-format pros
  • Fewer grout lines to clean and reseal
  • Makes a small Irish bathroom look bigger
  • Tile price per m² is often lower
Large-format cons
  • Needs flat, well-prepared walls and floors
  • Higher fitting price per m²
  • More waste in small rooms with many cuts

How Much Do Tanking and Preparation Add?

Preparation is the cost most quotes hide. ShamFix's October 2026 guide puts removing old tiles at €15 to €35 per m². Priming and levelling add €10 to €25 per m² where walls or floors are uneven. Old tiles in Irish homes often pull the plaster off with them, which adds skimming or boarding.

Tanking is a waterproof layer under the tiles. It protects the walls and floor in the shower and around the bath. Tile Merchant sells the Arc Premium Tanking Kit for €126.99, covering 5 m². That is about €25 per m² in materials alone. Tanking the wet zones of a family bathroom usually adds €300 to €600 installed. Full-room tanking, as in a wet room, costs about €600 to €1,200 (Build Me estimates).

Tanking matters most for walk-in showers and level floors. Our wet room ideas guide explains why every tile in a wet room needs it.

Grout is not waterproof

Tiles and grout let water through over time. Without tanking behind a shower, water can soak into plasterboard or timber joists. Leaks often show up first as a stain on the ceiling below.

Is Epoxy Grout Worth the Extra Cost?

Epoxy grout costs much more than standard cement grout, but it resists stains, mould and water far better. At Tile Merchant in October 2026, Bostik Ardacolor Xtrem Easy Epoxy costs €101.99 for 5 kg. Evo-Stik HI-White cement grout costs €25.99 for 10 kg. Per kg, epoxy is about eight times dearer.

The fitting takes longer too. Epoxy sets fast and must be cleaned off the tile face within minutes. So tilers work in small sections and charge more per m². For a typical family bathroom, epoxy grout adds about €200 to €400 to the job (Build Me estimate).

The result is worth it in the shower and on the floor. Epoxy joints stay their colour and do not need sealing. They suit pale grout, large-format tiles and walk-in showers where water sits longer. Many people use epoxy in the shower only and cement grout on dry walls, which keeps the cost down.

How Much Do Tile Trims and Schlüter Profiles Cost?

Tile trims finish the exposed edges: window reveals, bath edges, outside corners and shower niches. A plain metal tile trim costs €19.99 per 2.4 or 2.5 m length at Tile Merchant in October 2026. That price covers square-edge trims in matt black, brushed gold, champagne and polished silver.

Schlüter is the best-known trim brand. Its Jolly, Quadec and Rondec profiles come in aluminium, stainless steel and coloured finishes. Branded profiles in brushed or coloured finishes usually cost about €25 to €45 per length in Ireland (Build Me estimate). Stainless steel sits at the top of that range.

A typical family bathroom needs four to eight lengths. So trims add about €100 to €360 in materials. Fitting takes time too, because each corner is mitred by hand. Many tilers now mitre the tile edges instead of using trims, for a cleaner look. That costs more labour than a trim, especially on porcelain.

Match trims to your taps

Choose trims in the same finish as your taps and shower set. Brushed brass trims with chrome taps look like a mistake. Ask your tiler for a sample length before you order.

Does It Cost More to Tile the Floor or the Walls?

Per m², floor and wall tiling cost about the same. The difference is in the area and the prep. In a 5 m² family bathroom, the floor is about 5 m². The walls, tiled full height, add about 19 m². So walls make up roughly 80% of the tiled area and most of the bill.

Floors need different prep. The tiles must be anti-slip, usually rated R10 or above for a bathroom. Upstairs, on a timber floor, the tiler needs a stiff base such as cement board. That stops the grout cracking. Wall tiles need more cuts around windows, pipes and fittings.

Underfloor heating adds cost to the floor but not to the walls. An electric mat under the tiles costs about €400 to €900 installed (Build Me estimate). It dries the floor fast after a shower and feels warm underfoot.

How Much to Tile a Typical 4 to 6 m² Irish Family Bathroom?

Most family bathrooms in Irish semis and terraces are 4 to 6 m². Our worked example is a 5 m² room, 2.5 m by 2 m. It has a 2.4 m ceiling, a bath and one window. Tiled full height, that is about 24 m² of tiling. Tile Merchant's 2026 guide gives a similar figure of 22 to 28 m² for a typical bathroom.

We priced three specs. All include stripping old tiles, prep, adhesive, grout and fitting. Each figure is a Build Me estimate for Dublin, including VAT.

Build Me estimates, Dublin, incl. VAT, October 2026. Tiling only: plumbing, sanitaryware and electrics are extra.

By comparison, Handld's July 2026 guide puts a full bathroom retile, including strip-out and tanking, at €1,800 to €5,000. Tile Merchant's 2026 guide puts tiles and fitting for 22 to 28 m² at about €2,100 to €4,300. Our middle spec sits in the same range once prep and tanking are added.

Tiling is only one part of the job. Plumbing, sanitaryware, electrics and ventilation make up the rest, as our bathroom renovation cost guide shows by trade.

How Is a Bathroom Tiled, Step by Step?

Knowing the order helps you read a tiling quote and spot what is missing. In a 5 m² family bathroom, tiling usually takes 4 to 6 working days on site (Build Me estimate). Tanking and adhesive need drying time, so a good tiler does not rush them.

  1. Day 1Strip the old tiles and check the walls.Old tiles come off, and loose plaster is cut back to a sound surface.
  2. Day 1 to 2Board, skim or level the surfaces.Walls are made flat and floors are levelled or overboarded so the tiles sit true.
  3. Day 2Tank the wet zones.A waterproof membrane and tape go on the shower walls, bath area and floor, then dry.
  4. Day 3Set out the tile layout. The tiler plans where cuts fall, so no thin slivers end up at corners or windows.
  5. Day 3 to 5Tile the walls, then the floor.Walls usually go first, with trims fitted at edges, followed by the floor.
  6. Day 5 to 6Grout, clean and seal the joints.Joints are grouted, the tiles are cleaned, and silicone goes where tiles meet the bath or tray.

What Pushes Bathroom Tiling Costs Up?

Five things push most tiling quotes above the typical range. The first is bad walls: crumbling plaster or uneven blockwork needs boarding before any tile goes on. The second is the tile itself, especially small metro, mosaic or very large slabs. Tile Merchant sells 240 x 120 cm slabs at €59.99 per m², and these need specialist handling.

Third is the layout. Herringbone, diagonal and chevron patterns mean more cuts and more waste. Fourth is access: an upstairs bathroom in a city terrace with no parking slows deliveries and waste removal. Fifth is timing. In Dublin, ShamFix's October 2026 guide says rates sit at the upper end, with commuter counties close behind.

High impact
Hidden damage

Rotten joists or old leaks found under the tiles must be fixed first. They can add hundreds or more.

Medium impact
Pattern and format

Herringbone, mosaic and 120 cm+ tiles take longer to fit and create more waste.

Lower impact
Finishing touches

Epoxy grout, branded trims and a tiled niche add a few hundred euro each.

A walk-in shower adds cost too, because the floor needs a fall to the drain and full tanking. Our walk-in shower ideas compare trays with level, tiled floors.

How Do Build Me's Bathroom Packages Handle Tiling?

Every Build Me bathroom package includes tiling, prep and waterproofing in one fixed price. The difference is how much is tiled and the tile allowance. You choose tiles within the allowance, and we price any upgrade before ordering.

The Essential package (€9,307 incl. VAT) tiles the floor and the wet zones only. Its tile allowance is €20 to €25 per m², in 60 x 60 or 60 x 30 cm. Walls outside the shower and wet zones are not tiled. The Standard package (€14,301) tiles every wall full height. Its allowance is €45 to €60 per m², from 10 x 20 up to 120 x 60 cm. It suits the typical 4 to 6 m² family bathroom.

The Premium package (€24,176) uses large-format porcelain walls, an anti-slip porcelain floor and a decorative or mosaic feature. It adds a tanking system, epoxy grout and a tiled shower niche. If you pick dearer tiles, we show you the difference in writing before anything is ordered.

Will Bathroom Tiling Costs Rise in 2027?

Tiling costs are likely to rise gently in 2027, rather than jump. Here is why, based on the latest data.

  • Prep materials are rising faster than tiles. CSO data for September 2026 shows plaster up 5% and ready mixed mortar up 6.6% in a year. Those feed into levelling, boarding and skimming.
  • Overall material prices are climbing again. According to the CSO, wholesale building materials rose 3.8% in the year to September 2026. In December 2025, the rise was 0.9%.
  • Large-format tiles are now mainstream. Tile Merchant sells 120 x 60 cm porcelain at €34.99 per m², no more than many small tiles. Demand for skilled fitters who can lay them flat will keep fitting prices firm.
  • Walk-in showers mean more tanking. Level showers need full waterproofing and a fall to the drain, which adds prep time to more jobs.

In practice, booking early and fixing your tile choice before work starts protects you from most price moves.

FAQ

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom in Ireland?

A typical 4 to 6 m² family bathroom tiled full height costs about €3,200 to €5,400 in Dublin. That includes strip-out, prep and tanking. That is a Build Me estimate for 2026, including VAT.

How much do tilers charge per m² in Ireland?

Irish trade price guides from 2026 put tile fitting at €35 to €90 per m², before tiles. Supplied and fitted, most bathroom tiling costs about €70 to €150 per m².

How many m² of tiles do I need for a bathroom?

A 5 m² bathroom tiled full height needs about 24 m² of tiles. That is about 5 m² of floor and 19 m² of walls. Add 10% for cuts and breakages.

Is it cheaper to tile only the shower area?

Yes. Tiling the floor and wet zones only covers about 11 m² in a 5 m² room. That costs about €1,170 to €2,010, including prep and tanking (Build Me estimate).

Do I need tanking behind bathroom tiles?

You need it in the shower and around the bath. Tiles and grout are not waterproof, so tanking stops water reaching the wall, floor and ceiling below.

Is epoxy grout worth it in a bathroom?

Epoxy grout is worth it in showers and on floors. It resists stains and mould and needs no sealing. It adds about €200 to €400 to a family bathroom (Build Me estimate).

Can you tile over old bathroom tiles?

It is possible if the old tiles are firm and flat. But it is rarely a good idea in a shower. You cannot add tanking, and the extra weight and thickness cause problems at trims and fittings.
